Inspection at Ffos Las

Ffos Las is subject to an inspection

Ffos Las faces an inspection at 9am before the Welsh Champion Hurdle fixture can be given the go-ahead.

Clerk of the course Tim Long had the track covered earlier in the week in a bid to safeguard the prestigious meeting, but frost crept under the covers after a chilly Thursday night.

"We had a sharper frost than expected on Thursday night, minus 5C verging on minus 6C at its worst. Unsurprisingly it does feel a bit frozen under the covers," he said.

"It is due to remain clear into the night with the temperature dropping to minus 1C or 2C. Cloud cover is then forecast with some rain, but it's a question of how soon that comes in so we will look at 9am, when we will have a better idea."

Saturday's meeting at Wetherby was abandoned due to a frozen track and joined Sandown on the casualty list. A 3pm inspection had been called by clerk of the course Jonjo Sanderson, but even before that time the decision was taken.

He said: "I walked the course and it had only improved marginally since the morning. The temperature peaked at a giddy 3C for about 40 minutes, but it is dropping again. We are still frozen solid in places and frost will fall from 5pm and it's due to be minus 6C for five or six hours.

"It's one of the easiest decisions I've ever had to make, unfortunately, as it's one of our good days. I asked the BHA about rescheduling the Towton Novices' Chase, but they said there are funding issues and opportunities for the same horses for the next three weeks."

Officials at Fairyhouse will take another look at 8am ahead of their Saturday meeting after the course remained unfit for racing on Friday.

Members of the Turf Club took a look at the frost-hit surface in the afternoon but Peter Roe, racecourse manager of the County Meath track, reported all is not lost yet ahead of the seven-race card.

He said: "It was very frustrating, but the temperature did not get to what we expected. We did not want to pull it as the temperatures are due to rise. We are looking at it rising to 5C at around midnight with some rain, which should definitely help. If the forecast is right, we will be able to race."
