Doncaster falls to weather

Doncaster

Thursday's meeting at Doncaster has been abandoned due to frost and snow.

With temperatures set to drop alarmingly tonight, clerk of the course Jon Pullin was left with no option but to draw stumps.

"Temperatures have only got up to plus 1C today and there has only been marginal improvement. We still have a covering of snow and there are frozen areas underneath," he said.

"Temperatures are due to get down to minus 7C overnight and we're forecast poor temperatures for Wednesday and Wednesday night as well, so we have no chance."

Another of Thursday's National Hunt meetings, Huntingdon, is under threat due to snow and frost.

Conditions did improve slowly on Monday, but another night of sub-zero temperatures are forecast, with an inspection called for 8am on Wednesday.

Clerk of the course Sulekha Varma said: "We are still snow covered and frozen in places. There was a slow thaw, but not much, and it is due to get down to minus 4C or minus 5C. We'll inspect at 8am, but it's not looking good."

Varma is also the clerk at Warwick, who race on Saturday, and she added: "On Thursday and Friday the temperatures might get high enough to help, so we'll just have to see what happens nearer the time."
