Newbury keep watch on skies

Newbury Racecouse

Newbury remained raceable today although a forecast for snow this evening could be crucial to the Berkshire track's prospects of beating the weather on Saturday.

With the covers down, and the likes of Long Run, Sprinter Sacre and Zarkandar all due to have their final runs before Cheltenham, trainers and punters alike are desperate for the meeting to be on.

Clerk of the course Richard Osgood said: "The only recent change in the forecast to that of which we've been seeing all week is that we are supposed to get some snow this evening. I'm not sure how much we'll get. It won't be too cold, though, zero or 1C. It could be fairly cold on Friday night, that is a possibility, we'll just have to see."

At around 5pm on Betfair, the fixture was a shade of odds-on to be off.

Kempton were supposed to have a National Hunt meeting on Friday but switched to a bumpers-for-jumpers card on the all-weather track after the turf course was frozen.

Unfortunately forecast snow means that meeting must pass an 8am precautionary inspection.

Clerk of the course Barney Clifford said: "I've had to call an inspection because of the uncertainty in the forecasts. I thought it best to keep everyone in the loop. Snow flurries are the worry, we could get anything from one centimetre to six centimetres, and snow was the problem last week."

The big Kingmaker meeting at Warwick on Saturday has been called off early while Uttoxeter's meeting on Saturday was also abandoned due to frost and snow.

On a brighter note Musselburgh are confident that their rearranged card on Saturday will go ahead.

Hereford's meeting on Sunday is under serious threat and must pass an 8.30am inspection tomorrow while Plumpton's card on Monday is already a doubt.
