Walford ready to play Ace

Ubi Ace

Tim Walford is hoping to strike while the iron is hot with Ubi Ace in the John Smith's Scottish County Hurdle at Musselburgh on Saturday.

The North Yorkshire trainer has rerouted the six-year-old to the Edinburgh venue from the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury as the meeting scheduled for the same day was lost to the cold snap.

"The horse is right, so I want to run him now. We're running him at Musselburgh and then maybe go on to the Imperial Cup (at Sandown) or the County Hurdle (at Cheltenham)," said Walford.

"We've had to change our plan a bit, but I just can't keep him on the boil with the weather as it is. He's a very good horse and has never done a thing wrong. He's settled down and keeps improving. He likes early pace so if there isn't any we'd consider making our own pace. It wouldn't particularly matter."

Palawi has been put up 6lb for winning over the course and distance on New Year's Day, but his trainer John Quinn believes his love of the track will counteract the rise.

Quinn said: "He's in good fettle and he's up 6lb for winning at the track last time. This is probably a more competitive race than he won, but he's shown his liking for the place and he's very well, so he's got a chance. I'm looking forward to it."

Dontpaytheferryman has won over the course and distance three times, including twice last month and Brian Ellison, who also saddles Stormy Weather, is expecting bold displays from his pair.

He said: "Dontpaytheferryman has won 10 races and he loves Musselburgh. Stormy Weather is a good horse and won well at Newcastle last time. Both horses are in good form and I'm very hopeful."

Ferdy Murphy is using this race over the smaller obstacles as a prep race for Divers. The eight-year-old won a novice handicap chase at the Cheltenham Festival last March and is set to return there next month.

The Middleham handler explained: "It's just a case of getting a run into him and this looked a good place to go. It should be decent ground, which will suit him well as he wouldn't want to have a hard race on heavy ground at this stage of the season. He'll have this run and then go back to Cheltenham for the Byrne Group Plate."
