Everaard lands thriller for Walton

Everaard

Course specialist Everaard just prevailed in a thrilling finish to the John Smith's Stayers' Handicap Hurdle at Musselburgh.

For a moment it looked as if Charlie Longsdon was going to complete a treble as Ostland tanked his way to the front half a mile out, but he was a spent force by the second-last and Richie McGrath produced Everaard (13-2) to challenge between the final two flights.

Devotion To Duty was in pursuit and the favourite Moonlight Drive, who had dropped out before turning into the straight, was also staying on, but it was Everaard who notched up his fourth course win by a neck. Devotion To Duty finished second, and it was the same back to Moonlight Drive in third.

Winning trainer Kate Walton said: "He's just won a 0-140 handicap, so I'm over the moon.

"When I told Richie I'd entered him, he said we'd better get him some arm bands because he'd be out of his depth, but as it turned out the top weight was 133, so he was only 2lb out of the handicap.

"He was quite novicey in his chase last time, he spent a lot of time in the air, so we thought we'd send him back over hurdles. I came quite hopeful as he'd been in such good form with himself, and he's feeling very cocky now with everyone fussing over him."
