Sanders notches York double

Orientalist

Orientalist chalked up a hat-trick in nurseries with a gutsy performance under top weight in the Judith Marshall Memorial Stakes at York to initiate a double for Seb Sanders.

Never far off the pace, the 7-2 shot scored by a head from El Torbellino.

"He's won four this year and this was his third on the trot. He's a tough little horse and the handicapper can't put him up too much as he never wins by far," said trainer Eve Johnson Houghton's travelling head lad William Reddy.

Sanders came from last to first on 3-1 favourite Jo'burg to land the Constant Security Claiming Stakes by one and three-quarter lengths, and Lady Herries' six-year-old was claimed by Yorkshire trainer James O'Reilly for £22,000.

Adam Beschizza, one of the apprentice finds of the season, landed his first York success when bringing Rough Rock (20-1) late to pip Fishforcompliments by a head in the Countrywide Freight Stakes.

"We like to go to Yarmouth with him, but I thought we would come here as he was in the handicap and we could claim 5lb off him. He's been very well the last few days," said trainer Chris Dwyer.

Lee Topliss gained compensation for his narrow defeat on Fishforcompliments when scoring by half a length on Antigua Sunrise (9-1) in the Future Cleaning Services Apprentice Stakes to give Richard Fahey a double, but the jockey was handed a three-day ban.

The trainer said: "She's a tough mare and she likes it here. It's compensation for Lee - he'd have to be a genius to win on 'Fish'."

El Viento (8-1), now gelded and blinkered for the first time, gave Fahey his 49th two-year-old winner of the year when getting off the mark in the EBF Maiden Stakes, romping in by three and a half lengths under leading jockey Paul Hanagan.

"He's the quietest horse at home, ran well first time then completely flipped his lid, so we gelded him and shoved the blinkers on and it's worked," said the trainer.
