Donny downpour softens ground

Doncaster racecourse

Doncaster clerk of the course David Williams was a relieved man after much-needed rain fell on the track on Monday night ahead of tomorrow's start to the four-day St Leger Festival.

The going on Town Moor is now good to soft, having been good to firm. The welcome downpour resulted in an inch (25 millimetres) of rain.

"We've had a fair amount of rain predicted this year and it's never fallen, so I'm more than happy," said Williams.

"It could have done with coming a week ago to help with the grass growth. It's been so dry this year.

"It's good to soft ground and it may ease a little bit, especially on the round course, once it soaks in.

"It's a huge amount of rain in such a short space of time. I think good to soft is a fair appraisal at this time.

"The forecast is we could get some showers this afternoon, but it is pretty much a showery forecast for the week.

"I'm unsure about Saturday, but we could see some light rain. The forecast is changing all the time."
