Medic makes Walford switch

Master Medic (far side) in winning action at Ascot

Master Medic is to join Tim Walford's York stable following the retirement of Robert and Sally Alner.

The nine-year-old showed smart form in the first half of last season, winning a good race at Ascot and finishing second at the same track before being pulled up in the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day.

Walford is being sent the gelding as his jockey son Robert's partner is the Alners' daughter Louise.

"We've never had a Grade One horse before. Louise Alner has always looked after the horse and the owners have kindly sent it with her to us," Walford told At The Races.

"We are a hell of a team now. There are a lot of Walfords in our yard. He's coming from a very good trainer, so whether I can improve him, I haven't a clue. Time might improve him a bit.

"He could be entered at Down Royal for that big chase or he could go for the Charlie Hall. It is likely to be one or the other to begin with. We'll see how we go, see if he likes our place and how he settles in."
